SOME INFORMATION ABOUT US

Lake Hornborga is one of Europe’s most important bird lakes. The restoration of the dried-out lake is also one of the largest conservation projects ever carried out in Sweden.  Today, the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland works to preserve the lake and spread knowledge about nature. A Warm Welcome to Lake Hornborga!

Naturum Hornborgasjön

The building sits on stilts in the water, and was the first naturum designed and built in Sweden. It was inaugurated in 1986, to tell visitors about the lake. The County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland has been operating the naturum here since 2002. We work here to spread knowledge about nature and inspire people to get to out into the nature.

Other naturums can be found all around Sweden. In total, there are a bit more than thirty spread around the country. What is common to all naturums is that you can participate in exciting activities and explore beautiful and interesting exhibitions.

In the southern part of Lake Hornborga you will also find the Trandansen Info Centre. The County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland manages both the Naturum Hornborgasjön and the info centre. During the spring crane season, the visitor activities are run in close cooperation with Visit Hornborga. Visit is a joint tourist organisation consisting of the municipalities of Skara, Falköping and Skövde.

NATURE CONSERVATION ADMINISTRATION

At Lake Hornborga we do not only work with visitors. All practical matters related to nature conservation of the Reserve is also conducted from here. The staff who work here manage both the lands at Lake Hornborga and other nature reserves in Skaraborg that are managed by the County Administrative Board.

Many of the valuable things nature has to offer are in the Lake Hornborga Nature Reserve depend on care to be preserved. This refers for instance to the rich shore meadows where many shorebirds and plants thrive. Without harvesting and grazing, these areas would grow again. Then many species would also disappear.

A nature reserve such as the Lake Hornborga Nature Reserve can make it easier for agriculture production in the area.  By attracting and making room especially in the spring for the large birds that can otherwise cause great damage to freshly sown fields. The County Administrative Board is therefore actively working around the lake to reduce the conflicts with wildlife in the area. During the crane season, the cranes are fed so that they will remain for a while at Trandansen.
